I’ve seen first hand how breast cancer appears suddenly, attacks and destroys quickly. Over a decade ago, cancer took the lives of three family members, my aunt and two of her three daughters. They died within months of each other from breast cancer. It was devastating for family and friends to stand by and not be able to offer much to them besides comfort. We mourned their loss but honor their memory in many ways.
The month of October is dedicated to bring awareness to breast cancer. Highlighting hope for individuals diagnosed with breast cancer and cheering on the survivors who have fought hard against the disease. There are many events across the nation promoting breast cancer awareness, I came across a group that has an interesting way of demonstrating their support for the cause. Singing River Federal Credit Union, in Mississippi, is hosting their 2nd Annual Bras Across the River event. They are “asking women across the Gulf Coast to donate their bras for Bras Across the River, a community-wide event that will feature thousands of bras stretched across the Moss Point bridge on Highway 613 on Saturday, October 20, 2012.”
They’ll accept gently used or brand new bras up until October 15th. “Last year we collected more than 4,500 bras and increased awareness about this disease,” says SRFCU President/CEO Jimmy Smith. The goal this year is 6,000 bras. The credit union will donate one dollar for every bra received to breast cancer research. After the event, they will donate the bras to women shelters in the area.
Casually speaking and all the best,
